Main Street investors change their strategies USA Today

Date: 03.02.10

Since stocks stopped plunging in March, professional money managers and traders on Wall Street have piled back into the stock market, benefiting from the sharpest rebound in history. But, like Blank, many Main Street investors have yet to regain their stomach for the risky, uncertain and highly volatile world of stocks — leading Andre Weisbrod, CEO of Staar Financial Advisors, to note in a recent report that many buy-and-hold investors have unwittingly switched to a "buy-and-fold" strategy.

Individual investors who once embraced risk-taking have adopted a more defensive investing posture, preferring capital preservation over appreciation. Many are trimming the percentage of stocks they own and boosting holdings of safer investments, such as certificates of deposit and money market funds.

Harry Nieman, 73, a retiree from Pittsburgh, who lost 25% of his $2 million portfolio in the 2008-09 downdraft, just nibbles on individual stocks now, while stashing most of his cash in CDs and high-yielding online bank accounts. David Moran, 62, kept nearly 100% of his money in stocks during and after the 2000 tech-stock bust but sold a lot of shares before the March 2009 low. "I could never be 100% invested in stocks again," the Wayland, Mass., technical writer says.

Strategies?!?

Jan 26, 2008 by TiPP | Posted in Standards & Testing |

Ok so does anyone have any good strategies that they use or used when taking test in school. It's like everytime I get a test I get nervous and blank out. How could I possibly relax myself so that I can start to do well?

Thanks in advance for the help

Eat before hand, this does really help. I used to be the same way I would know what I was talking about, then get scared and not do as well as I could. Practice test help they get you used to the format, and the material so that it is not as scary. Just try to relax, breath and think about it as if it doesn't count.

Dont think as exams are the end of the world and if you wont perform then it will be very harmful for you just chill out and get easy and dont feel pressure while in exams....

What strategies are used in propaganda? Which strategies do you think have the greatest impact on the viewer?

What strategies are used in propaganda? Which strategies do you think have the greatest impact on the viewer? Why?

Propaganda works best when times are hard: Nazis used the economic devestation brought on by the aftermath of WWI to turn people against Jews, who the nazis blamed for losing WWI, and the rest of Europe whom they blamed for the economic crisis.

When times are hard, people are scared and/or want to blame someone for the country's problems.

So fear and blame work best. Prey on people's fears: The Jews are out to steal your money and enslave your children!

Or blame someone for your problem: You can't get a job because blacks are using affirmative action to take your jobs!

Perswation (if that's how you spell it). I have learned this in history and you might want to either show all the good things about the topic or all the bad things. but i wouldn't do both...

Propaganda was widely used by the Nazis and by the Allied Forces in WWII. The Nazis used mostly Hitler's speeches while the allied forces flew over Germany dropping pamphlets and letters. Both were very effective - for Hitler it turned a lot of people against the Jews and for the allies it scared the Germans because the pamphlets were literally falling from the sky alongside bombs. Propaganda generally feeds on fears people have already or issues they are concerned with - for the Germans Hitler was effective because the country was in such an economic mess and people needed someone to blame, Hitler gave them that. As the war raged on and Germany started to lose ground their (the people) fears changed leading to the propaganda the allies were dropping to be more effective.
For propaganda to be effective it has to deal with something that is already on the mind of the people you are trying to reach. Had Hitler tried the same arguments at a different time in history it would not have been quite as effective.

Religion (the ultimate propaganda)

What are some strategies you can use to mentally solve this expression?

Apr 08, 2009 by angela B | Posted in Mathematics |

What is an example of a calculation using one operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) that cannot be easily computed mentally? What are some strategies you can use to mentally solve this expression? Which mathematical properties does your strategy require?

Oh, there are many, many operations that can't be computed mentally very easily. Just look at functions with irrational outputs, like non-integer powers, trig functions, etc. To calculate them mentally is infeasible, although technically possible.

If you wanted to calculate values of these irrational functions, you would need knowledge of infinite series, power series, taylor series, taylor's theorem, and factorials. To do it mentally you would have to be able to calculate larger powers of a number, and add multiple large fractions together. Like I said, it's infeasible.

square roots are alot like women. if they're...

oh...wait...just one operation. let's see...

i have a difficult time squaring (multiplying) a million by a million. the strategy is to use exponents but when i put all those zeroes in the answer...it's difficult to comprehend mentally.

Also...any situation involving a formula, 'work' for example. how to figure work. the strategy: 1) know the formula (i.e. work = force * distance [physics] or work = rate * time [business]) and 2) use dimensional analysis to solve and check the answer (i.e. work units might be letters so the rate would be letters per time and the time units = minutes)

last thought...never use an answer without reflecting upon the feasibility of it. i mean...does it really make sense that a baseball pitcher hurls a slider at 217 mph? probably not.

Well...

Good luck.

What should be the Ideal Strategies in real estate?

I need to know about the Sales strategies, Marketing strategies and Leasing strategies (all separetely) in real estate market.
An interviewer asked this question to me few days ago. I had responded it positively also. But somewhere I feel, I could have been better answering this question. Hence, asking you all.
Seeking expert's answer. Thanks.

Leasing strategy is to have the building sit empty for the shortest possible time. Balance that with the owners' desire to make the most profit possible. Keep expenses down so tenants do not complain about "common area expenses".
Sales strategy. Get as many buyers and sellers to hire your company as possible. Get offers and completed contracts for the sellers and find houses for the buyers. Close the sales and follow up to make sure people are happy.
Marketing strategy. Spend the amount of money you need to get your company known in its target market but don't spend one penny more..

which position you are aiming at now from the interviewer company?

then only answers can come to you to that standard.

What strategies would you recommend to improve mutual understanding and minimize conflict among these troops?

You are a special assistant to the commander-in-chief of a peacekeeping mission to a war-torn part of the world. The unit consists of a few thousand peacekeeping troops from the United States, France, and four other countries. The troops will work together for approximately one year. What strategies would you recommend to improve mutual understanding and minimize conflict among these troops?

Quite simple really, have a mission everyone agrees upon doing, and also that everyone agrees with the same way of doing it. Who ever is the mission commander must follow the guidelines set forth before the mission. Oh and pretty much nothing can go too wrong. Its not totally impossible, but pretty darn close.

What strategies to you use to help you remember the materials?

Sep 11, 2007 by rcdreamz | Posted in Psychology |

Learning new material is wonderful, but of little value unless you are truly able to remember it for future use. What strategies to you use to help you remember the material we are covering? You may also address a situation in the past where you had a challenging topic and you were able to remember it long after the class was over. How were you able to do that?

try using it in simple conversations. for example, the word catharsis, every time there is a situation resembling the concept of the word. you might want to use it to explain the event. use it everyday. apply it if you can. in this manner, it will be a part of your everyday life. ^_^

I still struggle with this. Sorry.
I usually study for a test the night before so everything is fresh in my memory, them I ace the test and eventually forget everything sadly. I think the only way to truly remember something is to do it every once in awhile. If its math, do math problems, if its history watch documentaries on it or read books.

SOme things I dod remember, but mostly because they interested me in some way.

I use acronyms for EVERYTHING!! Without them I wouldn't be able to remember anything. If you google acronyms you can find some website's that will help. Good luck!!

One strategy is to refer to the old method doctors use - 1) watch a procedure being done, 2) do that procedure yourself, 3) teach it to someone else, and presto! you're a pro. Okay, so easier said than done, but it can be helpful. For example, you're studying for a horrible biology exam. You've never missed a day of class, and you review back over your notes often and ask questions when necessary (that's the "watching" part). Next, you find some poor lost soul in your class who is whinning about being totally confused in the class, and offer to study with them a couple of nights before the test (you'll be teaching them some of the material and restating it in different ways or giving examples so that they understand it too). Finally, you can find ways to apply the information to daily life that make you actually USE the information.

Also, for studying for the long term, I've found the best thing to do is study in small segments - don't sit down and memorize things or even just review notes for an hour or more on end. I study for about 20 or 30 minutes, go out for some coffee, come back, study for 20 minutes more, take the trash out or check my email, go back and study for another 20. And do this at least every other day for a week before a test. Of course, you may also want to go back even after the test and review everything to keep it fresh and remind yourself of little details or vocabulary that may have been lost! The most important thing is to have a set schedule that you don't change for any reason so that you don't start making excuses (one I'm notorious for is "hey, I already know this stuff... I don't need to go over it AGAIN" but practice makes perfect!)

What strategies should a company do to maintain its performance in rapidly changing competitive conditions?

I was thinking that a company should reduce costs and find a niche etc

do you have more suggestions?

thank you!

to keep up its performance, they need to innovate. innovation would help them stand out among their competitiors. of 8 hours of working mandates, ask the employees to innovate for 2 hours.

thanks peter

What design strategies are used by furniture designers?

Mar 08, 2008 by mintiecookie | Posted in Decorating & Remodeling |

Question:
You are to identify and discuss a range of design strategies used by furniture designers. "Any help would be gladly appreciated", as to i don't know anything about this.

They usually have several things in mind:
1. Stylish; they want it to stand out from the crowd.
2. Functional; it should be practical to use.
3. Ergonomic; it has to be comfortable or no one will want it.
4. Affordable; that is, within the budget of their target buyers.

What are some successful marketing strategies that have worked for you?

Dec 13, 2007 by Gregory K | Posted in Other - Advertising & Marketing |

I am starting my own insurance agency and am trying to build up my book of business through effective marketing. Although I have been working on some good strategies so far, I am looking for any advice to push it to the next level. What strategies have been successful for you?

I firmly believe that direct sales (cold and warm calling) are terrific ways to reach people. They are free and time after time I'm able to generate sales this way. I would augment any marketing with 5-10 calls per day to people introducing yourself. Make a note of who is potentially interested and continue to follow up with them.
