For the uncontrolled, there is no wisdom. For the uncontrolled there is no concentration, and for one without concentration, there is no peace. And for the unpeaceful how can there ever be happiness? Profound thoughts paraphrased from the Bhagavad Gita, are
increasingly in vogue as a source of rich reference material for pretty much any context! Quixo from Gigamic is all about concentration and realisation!
Declared Mensa’s Top Five Games (USA), winner of the Parents’ Choice Gold Award (USA), Games Magazine Top 100 (USA), Oscar Du Jouet (France), and a few more unpronounceable French awards, Quixo has all the relevant critical acclaim to impress the most reluctant game board player.
I’m baby sitting the almost nine- year-old Aran as I write about this masterpiece. He’s not typically the sort you’d mention in the same sentence as a ‘board game.’ Aran is hyper-active, scarily contrary and with the attention span of a grasshopper.
Yet, something tells me he’ll appreciate Quixo. Maybe it’s just foolish optimism. I’ll find out soon enough. But in the meantime, for what its worth, I rate Quixo right up there with my favourites from Gigamic (Quoridor and Quarto). If you’re reading this, try your hand at it. Not just to keep the kids occupied. There’s happiness at stake, remember?
Need a good strategy board game beyond RISK and Stratego?
My husband and son have discovered board games... They played Risk last weekend and my son was upset that it was based more on the luck of the dice than strategy. He's an economics major so if it includes some aspect of that, even better! They would like a game beyond the Risk and Stratego games. Any ideas?
Check out Settlers of Catan. I'd guess it's 75% strategy, 25% luck.
The island of Catan has just been discovered. You and your opponents are attempting to settle the island by building settlements, roads, and cities. You select locations based on the resources they offer and the probability of rolling the number to obtain those resources. There are several different strategies, the board position changes with every game. My son turned me on to it, and after only a few games I'm hooked.
Hope this helped

Stratego (board game) question?
i get my butt kicked at this game...any one have a good strategy?
There are some strategy videos on Youtube. I would post them but as Youtube is a Google product, Yahoo won't allow it as a source.
The Youtube videos suggest setting up decoy flags, memorizing which of your opponents pieces don't move (either flag or bomb), and general strategy moves.
Good luck!
Right so i just read over that and it sounds really confusing!
Email me and i can help you a lil more!
my straegy is based on defense. I attack with my 9 and simply wait for my oponent to waste a bunch of his men trying to figure out my plan. when his lines are thin i srtike with 8's and 9 to clear a path through left or right side. once the path is clear i bring more men and form a 'mini base' on my opponents side. he will then try to take out my concentration of men and as a result lose more of his offense. evetally it will be easy to tell where his flag is b/c he wont be moving pieces around it. and you go in for the kill
Stratego (formally a board game)?
I am looking for a computerized Stratego game. Would like to be able to play over a lan and/or the internet.
It's available here - http://www.gravon.net/
Does anyone know what the sale of the board game risk were when first sold?
I'm doing an article on board games featuring risk stratego and battleship. Any interesting anedotes would be appreciated.
Doing a simple search, I found a nifty bacground historical text on Risk which you may be able to pull some info on, though it misses on giving us exact sales figures. This is the first link.
The second link claims that similar variants of games existed through the middle ages and earlier, I dunno if that is useful to your project.
Thats about all I could find. It sounds unlikely, but you never know if you ask hasbro themselves, they could give you some info, especially if the info is easily accessible to them. Just politely state you're doing a project on the game's history, just don't hold your breath for an answer :) A link to their email page is the last on the list.
If you feel they'll sic their lawyers on you, then don't ask them, but if its a school project, it would be very evil of them to do that.
In your opinion, what is the best board game ever?
I recently discovered that RISK is my personal favorite. I mean, Stratego and Chess are awesome, but RISK just rules! It's the game of world domination... It's fun when you play it with six players. I've been playing it at school for several weeks. All six of us are good friends, which makes it even funner to betray and ally with people.
It's Chess. I love Risk too, but it's not the best ever. I think Risk's fatal flaw is that it's about 40% luck based. You can have the best strategy ever, but you'll still lose if you keep losing fights when you have 10 times their men.
That's why there are big chess clubs and leagues.
strategies and tips on how to play and win stratego?
I need Strategies and tips on how to win stratego? It's a board game. It's the first time I've even heard of it... help please!
Stratego has been around forever. First, you need to use your scouts effectively. They should either find a huge person or trade for their scouts before it finds your huge people (or bombs). Since they are the only piece that can move more than one hex, they are vital. Another tip is to keep your spy safe. He's the only piece that can kill the General and the best way I find to keep him safe is to keep him near the second most powerful piece on the board so that when the General takes that piece, you kill his General and still have your General on the board. Third tip I would have is to never touch a piece that refuses to move except with a bomber or a scout. A bomber is the only piece that deactivates the bombs and a scout dies to everything, so both of those pieces are expendible in locating bombs. Pieces that don't move are either flags, bombs, or spies that are trying to get the General close enough to sneak attack on. The spy pretends to be a bomb and when the General steps up near it to see if it will move, then the spy attacks. My tip, I never surround my flag with bombs, I surround it on one side with a few bombs and the #2 guy and the spy and on the other side with the General and I also don't put my flag in the back row. Most people think you should fight to the back row to capture the flag, but by putting it in the second or third row, it looks more like a bomb, is defendible by your 2 biggest pieces and will probably be passed up as a bomb by almost all your opponents pieces due to not being in the back row. Last tip, look for their bombers and look hard. If you can get all of them, then he has no way to win without risking his guys. Bombers are more important to eliminate than the General when it comes to flag hunting, so kill them and do it as quickly as possible.
Those are my tips and I hope you win a few games with them.
